A large proportion of us pro-wrestling fans are autodidacts. We go out of our way to educate ourselves on the inner workings of the industry, learning and employing insider terminology as we go. We consume backstage gossip, and critique current and future storylines. This enables and feeds our ongoing search for reality intrusions in the on-screen product. So, on Raw May 2005, while on the face of it, Lita was insulting Kane’s sexual prowess, we knew, through our constant consumption of the ‘dirtsheets’ (online gossip sites), that her comments were really directed beyond the screen, beyond fiction, at her real-life ex-boyfriend Matt Hardy. That is to say, the nature of our fandom allowed us to read the fiction differently – to layer reality on top of it.
More on this at a later date. But this is a pro-wrestling fandom appreciation post. Yesterday I attended The Love of Wrestling event in Manchester, UK. Plenty of amazing signings and Q&As from performers past and present, a dream for pro-wrestling collectors, and some beautiful pro-wrestling art. I highly, highly recommend. See the full list of wrestlers who attended this year here: https://www.fortheloveofwrestling.co.uk/
