Hi Reader! This week’s column feels like an odd tonal shift after the excitement of being in attendance at AEW All In. Not only the shift between watching live and on-screen, but also the difference in presentation between AEW and WWE. As this week’s column is another short one, I’d like to direct you to the first of my series, WWE Confessional Stories 2001-2019. This week’s entry looks at Eddie Guerrero’s 2004 SmackDown promo. So, without further ado…
Jade Cargill – SmackDown
After The Baddies’ entrance, as the group poses in-ring, Michin, who is performing tonight, takes Cargill’s normal position at the centre of the group. Cargill’s ego seems to have calmed and she’s accepting a more democratic direction for her group. The cohesion in Cargill’s group is juxtaposed with the commentators describing the friendship between faces Flair, Bliss and Paxley as a “marriage of convenience”.
The only minor tension in the presentation of Cargill’s group as coherent is Cargill, at times, taking a less active role in cheering on Michin, compared with B-Fab. Then, after Michin loses, Cargill chases off the faces and threatens them, leaving B-Fab to console Michin. This may hint that Cargill is more concerned with the professional status lost with Michin’s defeat than the physical or emotional condition of her friend.
Seth Rollins – Raw
Still no Rollins, unfortunately. The silence on Rollins may suggest they’re building to a surprise return. As his absence grows longer (I’m comparing this to Cargill’s absence post-WrestleMania, which only lasted three weeks), its potential meaning may shift. For now, I will keep tracking this and keep developing ideas on absence, which will be offered to you soon.
